On the occasion of the film which now goes to the movies with beautiful Leonardo Di Caprio as the enigmatic Gatsby, I wiped the dust off the book shelf from 1984, when it was the month's book in the Norwegian book club. I do not remember if I read it again, or if I have only seen the movie with Robert Redford and Mia Farrow. The Great Gatsby was in any case a very familiar term at the time, and discos and bars were named for this mythical man.
The novel written by American F. Scott Fitzgerald, is said to be one of the U.S. major masterpiece, and it is also part of the 1001 books you must read before you die. It is told by his friend and neighbor Nick Carraway holiday. Jay Gatsby is a handsome young man who really does not know. He bought a large estate in the neighborhood Carraway. It turns out that here is Daisy, an old flame of Gatsby lived. Gatsby has lots of parties and guests coming and asked uninvited, do not really know Gatsby, but everyone has an opinion about him and gossip and rumors abound. Was he a spy during the war? He studied at Oxford? Did he really kill a man? Etc. .. It attaches and drink and we also become more familiar with Daisy and Tom Buchanan, and Carraway and his friend Jordan Baker, and a few others. But Gatsby, we get to know him or he remains an enigma for us too? Anything we learn through some confidences to friend Carraway. Gatsby lived the American dream. He yearned to get up from nothing, and also managed to a certain extent. But what had he? What did he have on? The novel must be read only. This was America! This is America. The novel was written in 1925. It is wonderfully beautifully written - for a language! It builds up slowly and into the soul. It is sad, sorrowful, sad and tragic, but beautiful. It's a long time since I had goosebumps when I read a book about it, I got at the end of this book. Strong! Now I'm excited ok great to see the movie! Maybe I'll write more about the book and author later, between the time you can read more HERE The book has a nice epilogue of Haagen Ringnes.
Not long ago I bought the movie with Redford and Farrow. Is occasionally visited Byporten at Oslo S, it happens that I buy movies. And not to mention books. And not long I saw it actually. And when I read the review of the book I wanted to read it. Have not seen the movie with di Caprio. Would have been fun and seen it too. And compared to what I think in relation to the old movie. Exactly the same version of the book club book-I have too, and it's almost 30 years since I read it. Now I want to read it again, guaranteed also with some "newer" eyes. I'll definitely watch the movie with di Caprio. A great actor! Reply Delete
This book I've read and heard a lot about lately, I also bought it and now it stands, waiting to be read. But I have not actually gotten to me what it's about, except that it is about this Gatsby, so it was nice to read your review. I look forward to starting it. Maybe I should have done it before I see the movie. Otherwise I Django Unchained with DiCaprio hin day - a very good film that I recommend :) Reply Delete
